JOB DESCRIPTION: Controls Designer/Engineer


PURPOSE:  Responsible for designing and developing systems used to monitor and control HVAC equipment, mechanical processes, and machinery. Ensures the designs are implemented to meet stringent quality and safety standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Design and develop new and retrofit control systems.
  2. Assist with maintaining existing systems.
  3. Assist with startup, checkout and commissioning of control systems.
  4. Work with HVAC engineers, controls engineers, controls technicians, project managers, and other internal staff to ensure compliance with project requirements.
  5. Liaison with clients, suppliers, contractors and relevant authorities.
  6. Troubleshoot and problem-solve.
  7. Control the cost of materials and labor of each project.
  8. Understand and ensure compliance with the health and safety regulations and quality standards.
  9. Provide advice and consultancy support.
  10. Create bill of materials and purchase control devices, materials and equipment.
  11. Programming of DDC and PLC control systems.
  12. Assist with developing new business proposals.
  13. Complete work properly within the estimated cost.
  14. Control the cost of materials and labor of each project.
  15. Mentors fellow employees to enhance skill sets.
  16. Other duties as requested, directed or assigned by supervisor


  1. Knowledge of supervisory principles, practices, and techniques.
  2. Design and drawing development for DDC and PLC control systems.
  3. Proficient with computers, including Microsoft Office, AutoCAD and AutoCAD Electrical.
  4. Excellent analytical, problem solving, and trouble shooting skills.
  5. Skill in estimating time and material requirements.
  6. Excellent communication skills, including listening, reasoning, verbal and written.


Education and Experience:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechanical engineering or related field with training in building automation systems, PLC systems, or similar low voltage automated control systems.
  2. 3 to 5 year’s experience in controls design and/or installation is preferred, but not required.


Physical/Environmental/Work Requirements:

  1. Must be able to: Travel to customer locations.  Stand or walk for long periods of time during the regular work day; use arms and hands to reach for, handle and manipulate objects; lift and carry materials weighing 50 to 100 pounds; climb up and down ladders, work at high heights, scaffolds and other climbing devices; carry tools and equipment; work while in stooped, kneeling, crouched, and crawling positions; be able to see naturally or with correction, to safely perform designated tasks.
  2. Must be able to: Perform assigned tasks under all types of environmental and weather conditions including severe cold, extreme heat, wet or dry weather and high winds.  Environmental conditions may include areas where toxic or caustics chemicals or fumes are in use or being stored.
  3. Works in an office environment using computer and develops diagrams.
