CASE STUDY 6

Grande Cheese II

There were several aspects of this project designed to save energy, reduce maintenance and increase safety while maintaining budget allocations. There were two main areas where our design significantly improved the operation of the building. The first is the ammonia refrigeration system design, which has shown to save upwards of 38% in electrical costs while significantly reducing maintenance. The second is the hot water heating system which has reduced gas costs by a sizable 5-10% while significantly reducing ongoing maintenance costs.

Innovative Project Construction Techniques

TIG welding was used on the piping system to reduce system contamination from welding slag which can damage valves, pump and compressor seals, and compressors themselves. The TIG welding also helped to minimize the weld spatter on the building's roof preventing an often significant cause of roof leaks.

An epoxy painting system was applied to reduce refrigeration pipe corrosion. According to the International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration, corrosion of piping systems is one of the leading causes of ammonia releases. We used an epoxy paint application on the ammonia piping to guarantee mechanical integrity over the life of the system.

Rohde Brothers came on to the project team as a team member committed to achieving our project goals.
