As the engineers at Rohde Brothers worked with process cooling, HVAC, energy recovery and other heating and cooling applications, they weren’t satisfied with the current control options that were available commercially. “We knew we could do better while gaining multiple advantages over both the current commercial options and our competitors. We took it upon ourselves to develop a better, universal system that compliments the refrigeration, heating and cooling systems that we install,” said Mike Rohde, president of Rohde Brothers. The solution is the innovative control package, Rohde SmartControl System.

It began with a small process-cooling system at a beta testing site to prove out several concepts. The concepts tested ranged from need-based defrost operation, VFD driven compressors and cycling sequences to provide optimum load matching, and several failure mode effects analysis. The single greatest accomplishment was discovering the process to integrate, and most efficiently utilize, “free cooling” into the package. “Each system creates unique challenges,” says Mike Rohde, but Rohde SmartControl System creates a simple approach that maximizes the use of free cooling whenever possible. This relates to yearly savings that customers have never experienced before. Rohde Brothers works hard to gain and capture all possible savings.

The initial beta-testing and subsequent findings lead to the installation of a full-testing facility at the Rohde Brother’s headquarters intended to continue testing and perfecting the Rohde SmartControl System. This innovative control package utilizes the latest in VFD’s and basic refrigeration control with the latest DDC control and system sensors. It monitors critical system parameters and makes adjustments as needed to optimize system performance while providing the convenience of being monitored on-site or remotely.
