JOB DESCRIPTION: Estimator – Sheet Metal

DEPARTMENT: Estimating

PURPOSE: Perform customer estimates, inventory control, and maintain inside sales opportunities with current and new customers, with some Project Manager duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Team leader contributing to a positive and productive environment in the Company.
  2. Perform as Bid Captain working with the customer, estimators, engineers and designers to develop estimates and proposals.
  3. Develop and maintain office forms and estimating procedures and guidelines.
  4. Develops customer estimates, tracks and maintains inventory levels, customer invoicing, recommend price increases, end of month costing, and develops fabrication drawings.
  5. Reviews estimates and revisions for completeness and accuracy.
  6. Reviews project plans and specifications and coordinates with the project team to confirm complete scope.
  7. Prospects revenue opportunities with current and new potential customers.
  8. Identify risk issues and their order of magnitude.
  9. Communicates with prospects via telephone, email, etc. to identify appropriate contacts, qualify and drive leads through the process.
  10. Works closely with accounting and operations.
  11. Ensures the flow of project information is maintained and documented.
  12. Develops and maintains cost data, including labor and equipment rates, installation methods and production rates.
  13. Responds to customer requests.
  14. Analyze alternate means and methods to determine the most economical alternative.
  15. Engages with technical discussions with current and potential customers.
  16. Participate in the transfer of information on successful projects.
  17. Breakdown project budgets and prepare project booking.
  18. Builds effective relationships with customers, design team, specialty contractors, suppliers and user groups that reflect and support company core values and meets or exceeds the customers’ expectations.
  19. Develops and maintains resource information on subcontractors in an attempt to become a preferred provider.
  20. Prepares reports, analyze data, and identifies solutions.
  21. Answer questions, in person and by telephone; respond to inquiries from customers, and others, and refer, when necessary, to appropriate person, or department.
  22. Keeps management informed of all activity, including timely preparation of reports.
  23. Assist in the preparation and review of work plans as requested.
  24. Actively participates in industry, client and community relations to enhance company image.
  25. Mentor fellow employees to enhance their skill sets.
  26. Perform other duties as assigned by the Operations Manager.


  1. Knowledge of supervisory principles, practices, and techniques.
  2. Experience with design and construction of mechanical systems.
  3. Excellent problem solving, analytical, and trouble shooting skills.
  4. Knowledge of construction costs, estimating and project management.
  5. Excellent communication skills, including listening, reasoning, verbal and written.

Education and Experience:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  2. Minimum 5 – 10 year’s experience with industrial sheet metal.
  3. CEM certification, LEED AP, and/or other trade related accreditations are preferred.

Physical/Environmental/Work Requirements:

  1. Must be able to: Sit for long periods of time during the regular work day; use arms and hands to reach for, handle and manipulate objects; lift and carry materials weighing 5 to 25 pounds. Be able to see naturally or with correction, to safely perform designated tasks.
  2. Must be able to: Perform assigned tasks in an office environment using computers and other office equipment.

Will be required to perform other duties as requested, directed or assigned.
