JOB DESCRIPTION: Sheet Metal Worker


PURPOSE:  Fabricate, assemble, install, and repair sheet metal products and equipment, such as ductwork, heat pumps, exhaust fans, rooftop units, duct collectors, and air handling units.  Work may involve any of the following:  setting up and operating fabricating machines to cut, bend, and straighten sheet metal; shaping metal over anvils, blocks or forms using hammer operating soldering and welding equipment to join sheet metal parts inspecting, assembling and smoothing seams and joints of burred surfaces.  Work in a safe manner and keeps work area clean.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Install assemblies, such as flashing, tubes, heating and air conditioning ducts, furnace casings, rain gutters, and down spouts, in supportive frameworks.
  2. Select gauges and types of sheet metal or non-metallic material, according to product specifications.
  3. Drill and punch holes in metal, for screws, blots and rivets.
  4. Fasten seams and joints together with welds, bolts, cement, rivets, solder, caulks, metal drive clips, and bonds in order to assemble components into products or to repair sheet metal items.
  5. Fabricate or alter parts at construction sites, using shears, hammers, punches, and drills.
  6. Trim, file, grind, deburr, buff, and smooth surfaces, seams, and joints of assembled parts, using hacksaws, and hand, rotary, or squaring shears.
  7. Inspect individual parts, assemblies, and installations for conformance to specifications and building codes, using measuring instruments such as calipers, scales, and micrometers.
  8. Determine project requirements, including scope, assembly sequences, and required methods and materials, according to blueprints, drawings, and written or verbal instructions.
  9. Be able to Mig, Tig, & Arc weld.
  10. Must be willing to cross trade.
  11. May be called out at odd hours or have to work long hours in case of emergency.
  12. Must be willing to work in and out of state.
  13. Must have valid driver’s license and be insurable to drive.
  14. Mentors fellow employees to enhance their skill sets.


  1. Knowledge of sheet metal and welding techniques. (Mig, Tig, & Arc)
  2. Skill in fabrication, installation, and repair of sheet metal and other equipment.
  3. Good  mechanical aptitude.
  4. Good communication and reasoning skills.
  5. Hoisting and rigging skills.
  6. Knowledge of Testing and balancing.

Education and Experience:

  1. High School Diploma or G.E.D. Must have taken and passed algebra. Must pass an aptitude test and completed an Apprenticeship or 10 years of sheet metal experience.

Physical/Environmental/Work Requirements:

  1. Must be able to:  Stand or walk for long periods of time during the regular work day; use arms and hands to reach for, handle and manipulate objects; lift and carry materials weighing 50 to 100 pounds; climb up and down ladders, work at high heights, scaffolds and other climbing devices; carry tools and equipment; work while in stooped, kneeling, crouched, and crawling positions; be able to see naturally or with correction, to safely perform designated tasks.
  2. Must be able to: Perform assigned tasks under all types of environmental and weather conditions including severe cold, extreme heat, wet or dry weather and high winds.  Environmental conditions may include areas where toxic or caustics chemicals or fumes are in use or being stored.  May be required to operate or work around power tools.

Will be required to perform other duties as requested, directed or assigned.
